Thaksin wakes up to the reality...

It is very interesting to observe the dithering with regards to Burma which the Thaksin government calls foreign policy. Our business-minded prime minister seems to be in a bit of a pickle.

While the Burmese military ignores the international border, captures a Thai military base and shells a Thai border town, Mr Thaksin has saddled himself with a defence minister whose lucrative logging concessions keep him snugly in the pocket of the military. The poor foreign minister, Mr Surakiart, seems hopelessly caught in the middle.

Now it seems that the original plan of Thaksin and Chavalit to make a visit to Burma is being put on hold.

A cynic might assume that this means there are no telecommunications deals to be made at present, or that the last few trees still standing on the Burma side of the border have been judged not worth cutting.

An optimist would think that perhaps Mr Thaksin has finally noticed that the government of Burma is a pariah government, condemned by hundreds of international organisations and foreign nations for gross and systematic human rights violations.
