At the Euro Burma NGO meeting in late August in Brussels, it was suggested that everybody should be wearing a yellow flower on December 8th. This is the symbol of the 10th year anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize to Aung San Suu Kyi and her fight for democracy in Burma.

The Campaign is pleased to announce the weaving project called, "Weaving for women", on the Thai Burma border. They are currently busy making 500 yellow flowers for people to wear on the December 8th in Brussels.

"We have now ordered 500 yellow flowers for people to wear on the December 8th to show our support for Aung San Suu Kyi here in Brussels, said Sally Steen, who is working for Euro Burma. The flowers will be made as a safety pin. They will be strong orangish yellow, the colour of courage, and cost only 20 Baht each, plus postage.

The project is a part of the Nobel Peace Laureate Campaign for Aung San Suu Kyi and the People of Burma, who is making events all over the world on the 8th of December, two days before the 10th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Aung San Suu Kyi.

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines has given their support to the Nobel Peace Laureate Campaign for Aung San Suu Kyi and the People of Burma.

Liz Bernstein, coordinator of the ICBL informed the secretariat that the ICBL would like to support the Burma Peace Campaign. "We have now sent out a message to all national landmines campaigns with the Website and info about the campaign", said Bernstein.

When asked about why the ICBL wanted to support this campaign ,Berstein said Burma is Southeast Asia‘s hidden landmine crisis. Today landmines are being laid on a daily basis by both the forces of the military government and opposition ethnic militias. The annual rate of injury and death due to landmines in Burma today are estimated by the Landmine Monitor 2000 to be the highest of any Southeast Asian country, including Cambodia.

She also informed that the political opposition Committee Representing the People‘s Parliament (CRPP), which includes Aung San Suu Kyi‘s party the National League for Democracy (NLD) stated in Rangoon in January 2000 that concluding a ban on the antipersonnel landmine in Burma will be their policy "as a matter of national urgency" upon their ability to form the parliament to which they were elected in 1990.

The ICBL released a new report on the landmine situation in Burma in September this year. For the full report, please visit the

Ethnic groups clash with military near gas pipeline zone in south

BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom; Nov 8, 2001
Text of report by Burmese opposition radio on 7 November

DVB [Democratic Voice of Burma] has learned that a combined group of Karen commandoes from the KNU [Karen National Union] Central Headquarters and members of Col Pan Nyunt faction of the New Mon State Party [NMSP] were involved in the assault near the vicinity of the natural gas pipeline in Yebyu Township of Tavoy District in the past few days.

A battle broke out when the regional SPDC [State Peace and Development Council] battalion, combing the area after they received news that the KNU commandoes were preparing to attack the natural gas pipeline, clashed with the guerrillas. In the earlier reports the SPDC regional battalions were unable to identify the attackers but according to local people they were from the NMSP faction and KNU commandoes.

The combined Mon and Karen group numbers around 100 persons. They have split into three smaller groups and are active along the natural gas pipeline vicinity. Villagers who have acted as guides and porters told the SPDC troops that the group possessed shoulder-fired rocket launchers and rockets. The region is still declared an emergency zone and troops from Military Operations Management Command No 9 and No 19 and from battalions under the Coastal Region Military Command and Southeast Military Command are combing the area to flush out the attackers.

Meanwhile, the War Office in Rangoon has issued an order prohibiting any armed group from approaching and entering the natural gas pipeline zone. Furthermore, severe action will be taken against any person guiding or helping the armed national races rebels. According to the latest reports, members of SPDC LIB [Light Infantry Battalion] No 62 and Col Pan Nyunt's NMSP faction clashed near Leikkok Village in Ye Township. The number of casualties is still not known.
